Recently, the Swedish Trotting Association
and the Norwegian Trotting Association have worked together
to develop a good plan for breeding coldbloods and to
prevent inbreeding problems.
The coldbloods have problems with inbreeding.
Especially problems with their front knees are inherited,
such as carpitis.
In both countries, all coldblood and standardbred
stallions must be approved to breed commercially. To
develop a healthier coldblood, certain horses are disallowed
to breed due to inheritable disorders. These disorders
disqualify any foal of a stallion to be registered in
Norway or Sweden. Such disorders are osteochondrosis
and severe ossification of the hoof cartilage. Ridglings
are precluded from breeding and registering any foals.
However, there are no rules regarding breeding mares.
